Detecting the moisture content of heat insulation materials using a neutron moisture meter

With the aging of plants, in recent years, the corrosion of installed pipes and equipment at temperatures from room temperature to 150°C has become a problem. The cause of corrosion is often that heat insulation materials absorb water and this creates an atmosphere for corrosion. Corrosion inspections to date required scaffolding, exterior materials, and thermal insulation materials to be removed, but by using a neutron moisture gauge, it is now possible to carry out more efficient corrosion inspections by detecting, ahead of time, parts (parts where the heat insulation material contains water) that have a high likelihood of suffering corrosion.
Measurement principle of neutron moisture meter
When fast neutrons emitted from the radiation source hit moisture (hydrogen atoms), thermal neutrons are produced.
The amount of moisture is measured by counting these thermal neutrons in neutron detector tubes (helium).
